The Waipu Caledonian Society is proud to announce the 10th annual Scottish Fiddle Competition to be held at the Highland Games on 1 January 2019.

The competition was reinstated in 2010 after a 90-year gap. As far as we are aware, this is the only Scottish fiddle competition in the whole southern hemisphere! There are other traditional fiddle competitions, but they are not Scottish… they cover Irish, bluegrass, Australian bush music, Swedish etc.

Note: If anyone has any information about the original competition up to 1908, please pass this on to the Waipu Caledonian Society who are collecting archives for the up-coming 150th Games.

Our judge for the 2019 Scottish Fiddle Competition is Matthew Robertson (Photo Above). Known for his musical versatility as a Scottish fiddler, composer/arranger, and as a dancer, SCD teacher and ceilidh caller, Matthew is at the centre of a renaissance of tradition-informed dance music performance in Melbourne and further afield. He’s passionate about how traditional and newer Scots music partners social dance, and how the dance pulse enlivens our grand tunes.
